Today, there are no shortage of places for you to shop. But there are only a handful of quality jewelry stores offering custom design. At Dominic’s Fine Jewelry, it’s a big part of what we do, and a passion of ours. We bring extraordinary knowledge and skill to the process. But don’t just take our word for it. See what our customers have to say about us here.
At Dominic’s Fine Jewelry, we were creating custom bridal jewelry more than 40 years ago, long before it became as popular as it is now. We know the desire for couples to have a special and symbolic personalization of their relationship conveyed in their engagement and wedding rings is as relevant today as it was back then, if not even more. A custom ring is as unique as the people celebrating their relationship. And a custom designed engagement ring reflects your personal aesthetic by allowing you to consider every option you can imagine, from metal type to diamond setting, to the diamond’s shape, to the intricate engravings made in the metal. A custom ring can include details that are meaningful to only you and your partner. It’s something you helped create. It’s as one-of-a-kind as the life you plan to spend together. And, it’s also surprisingly affordable.
Our Custom Designed Engagement Ring Process
The process of taking your custom design engagement ring from concept to completion is far faster and easier than when our doors first opened, although it’s still as exciting and fun today as it was back then.
Our First Meeting
The first thing you’ll do is meet with Brianna in our Design Center to take a quick personality and style quiz. Although the questions aren’t directly related to jewelry, your answers will more clearly lead her to your style. From there, additional styles will be able to be filtered in and out to help us greater pinpoint the ring of your dreams.
In years past, couples always wanted a diamond, but today’s couples often look for alternative stones, such as sapphires or even morganites. Want to see something traditional? We’ve got it covered. Sleek and minimalist? Got it. Have a ring you inherited that you want us to redesign and make more “you”?
We can restyle rings too, on-site by our bench jeweler. This is also a popular option for couples who have been married a long time and want to update their ring to look more current. We can even take multiple items and restyle them into one beautifully updated piece!
You can show us pages from magazines, photos from a Pinterest board, or even something you drew up on a napkin. We’re that flexible!
We’ll also talk about your lifestyle at this point. If you’re really active, we may point out some metals and finishes to avoid if you plan to wear your ring every day. We’ll go over all of the options so you’re comfortable with fits your lifestyle and your budget, too. For example, silver is a much less expensive metal. Though it is naturally quite white, it does tarnish, and it should not be used for an engagement or wedding ring. It is far too soft a metal to hold up on an everyday basis.
Platinum is a very dense metal and weighs 60% more than a comparative 14 karat white gold piece. This metal is more expensive but will not wear away like white gold. For pieces with many small diamonds or ornate design, it is an ideal white metal.
White gold can be 10 karat, 14 karat, or 18 karat. It is essentially yellow gold with other alloys mixed it to make it a whitish color. For white gold to be completely “white”, it needs to be plated with rhodium, a metal in the platinum family. Because it weighs less than platinum and is easier to work with, it is less expensive. Keep in mind that engagement rings designed in white gold will require regular rhodium replating to keep them in perfect condition. Our bench jeweler is also an expert goldsmith and will be able to help you make informed decisions!
Once we have the stone and metal decided and have narrowed down your style, you’ll still have plenty of time to make some tweaks. Once you’re nodding your head in excitement, our next stage is rendering the photo and showing you how it will look on your hand. We’ll discuss the quality level of several diamonds and even show you how the ring will look when wearing various nail polish colors. You can approve the design at this stage or have a few styles emailed so you can think it over, all with price quotes.
Once you’ve approved the ring design, we’ll be able to create a resin model within a week and a half. We can even show it to you painted in silver or gold so you can get an even more precise idea of what the finished ring will look like! At this final stage, you’ll be able to add engraving or a small birthstone to the inside of your ring. The timeline from casting to final production is about two and a half weeks.
It’s quite common at this time for couples to consider wedding bands to match. We can have these made to fit flush with an engagement ring or to be worn alone. Many men today have two wedding bands made; one in fine metal to wear when they’re out and another in a material that doesn’t scratch, like tungsten for example, that can be worn at the gym or work. If this is of interest to you, just let us know. Hand engraving wedding bands is a rare art form, but it is still alive and well at Dominic’s Fine Jewelry. This touch of tradition can be something as simple as initials, as personal as an inscription, or as elegant as fine scrollwork. We’ve engraved some pretty special sentiments inside wedding bands over the years, so put our bench jeweler to the test!
The Big Reveal
Your finished ring is polished, the stone is set in the final design, and all you have to do now is propose. And because we’ve been in the business since 1988, we can also help you determine all the best romantic spots in the area if you need help with that, too.
What’s the Timeline Again?
Now that you’re excited to get started on our custom engagement ring experience, you’re probably wondering how much time this will take. No worries! Most custom rings take between 3-4 weeks from concept to completion.
